We don't do Santa at our house. Don't get me wrong, we aren't afraid of him. Our kids know who he is, we'll watch cute Christmas movies with Santa and if we are somewhere with a Santa and they want to see him, we'll let them do that, just as we would if they saw Elmo or something. Santa is a happy little character who is in books and movies. He's not too different in my kids minds than Dora the Explorer or Buzz Lightyear.
We do do Saint Nicholas. Today, December 6, is his day. We learn all about Saint Nicholas, as in the actual man. We read about a book about who Saint Nicholas actually was. We talk about the legend of Santa Claus coming from this man and the idea of giving gifts on Christmas most likely originated here. We talk about how Saint Nicholas gave anonymously. He wanted the thanks and praise to go not to himself but to God. We talk about how important it is to give to others and to do so from our hearts, not because people are watching or we get a nice thank you, though sometimes thank you's are nice, but because giving is a reflection of all God gave to us.
Then we ask the kids if they have any ideas to secretly give to someone; we keep it a secret, like Saint Nicholas did, so they too can only thank God;)
It is a special day, but in honor of secrecy- no pictures or details today, mama just will ponder it in her heart.
